Double drive time, explained plainly
Why your California moving invoice includes travel you didn't watch happen.
What it is
California regulates how household movers bill travel on hourly intrastate jobs. The common shorthand is "double drive time": the loaded drive between your origin and destination is counted twice in billable hours, in place of separate charges for getting the truck to and from you.
It replaces a vaguer set of charges with a rule that's at least predictable, and it's the reason a cross-town LA move at 4pm can cost meaningfully more than the same move at 9am.
How to keep it small
- Start early — a morning slot avoids the worst traffic on both legs
- Avoid Friday afternoons and month-end congestion where you can
- Confirm on the estimate exactly which minutes are billable
